Hamilton takes the lead as Sainz retires

Lewis Hamilton has taken the lead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after Carlos Sainz was forced to retire with a hydraulics issue. The Mercedes driver passed Sergio Perez around the outside of Turn 1 and immediately set about building a gap over the Red Bull.

Sainz's retirement a blow to Ferrari

Sainz's retirement is a major blow to Ferrari's hopes of a strong result in Baku. The Spaniard had started the race in third place and was running well before his car developed a problem. This is the second time in as many races that Sainz has been forced to retire due to a technical issue.

Hamilton on course for victory

Hamilton is now the clear favorite to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion has a comfortable lead over Perez and looks set to add to his tally of victories this season. This would be Hamilton's first win in Baku since 2018
