In a bombshell announcement, former Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard has announced her departure from the Democratic Party. In a scathing letter published Tuesday, Gabbard accused the party of being "completely controlled by an intolerant clique of woke activists."
Gabbard, a two-term congresswoman and Iraq War veteran, once considered a rising star of the Democratic Party, and even ran for president in 2020. However, she has increasingly clashed with party leaders over her progressive views on foreign policy and social issues.
In her letter, Gabbard criticized the Democratic Party's "hysteria" over issues such as racial justice and transgender rights, which she said was alienating moderate and independent voters. "I can no longer remain in today's Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an intolerant clique of woke activists who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking conflicts by falsely labeling their opponents as 'racist,' 'sexist,' 'homophobic,' or 'transphobic,'" Gabbard wrote.
Gabbard's departure is a major blow to the Democratic Party, which has already endured a series of high-profile defections in recent months. It also highlights the growing divide within the party between its progressive and moderate wings.
